A FASHION expert has shared the nine wardrobe you should ditch immediately if you don't want to look cheap and tacky.

Shea Whitney slammed certain design trends as well as entire colour palettes in a scathing video - from jeans to handbags, no item is safe.

"A lot of you probably have similar things in your closet that you're still wearing and I want to share with you why I think they look bad," the fashion pro explained in the viral YouTube video.

Neon tops

A perfectly good top, jumper or even dress can be ruined if it's in a neon colour, Shea explained.

She showed off a striped neon green jumper to prove her point and slammed: "When it comes to this neon green colour it's doing no one any favours.

"I don't what your skin tone is, it looks bad on you and I think it's just a very cheap colour."

So, what should you wear instead?

Shea suggested wearing a simple back and white stripe if you want to wear something with a bit more interest while still looking stylish and chic.

Distressed tops

Although some clothing items can still look expensive when they're distressed, it's best to avoid them if you're unsure.

Showing off a pricey top from Free People, Shea said the thin material paired the the distressed hems made for a very tacky looking garment.

"I can be on board with distressed jeans but I don't think it works or translates with tops, this just looks like it's an old rag," she said.

'built-in' tops

Supermarket chic or high end high street -- can you tell the difference between high end jeans more than double the price of their supermarket twins?

Tops with 'built-in' shirts, cuffs, or anything else are a huge no-no, according to Shea.

Not only is it "very unflattering" but it's also always really obvious that it's not actually two items layered together.

So if you want to layer a shirt under your top, go for it! Just ditch the ones with fake collars and cuffs poking out from them.

Abstract swirl patterns

There was a point when you couldn't go into any clothing shop without seeing a particular swirly abstract pattern on at least something, but it's so outdated now, Shea said.

"I do think this pattern makes you look outdated," she slammed.

You could always go for a sweet floral design if you want something with a pattern on it - but leave the swirls on the shop floor.

Bulky patterns

When it comes to picking patterned items of clothing, Shea told fashion fans to steer clear of large designs.

She explained that smaller and more simple patterns will make clothes look more expensive, so keep your eye out for dainty designs instead.

Just as with other patterned designs, smaller is better when it comes to animal print.

Shea showed off a leopard print top to prove her point, and noted that the large print makes it look cheap and tacky.

Since leopard print is bang on trend right now, this is something you might want to consider when rooting through the rails.

Shiny hardware on handbags

Not only can shiny hardware show scratches and dents more, but its also a dead giveaway that the bag is on the cheap side.

The tone of the metal hardware is also important, according to the pro.

Rose gold coloured buckles can often make the bag look on inexpensive, while true gold or even silver will be more timeless.

Contrast stitching

A pretty specific thing Shea added to her list of fashion faux pas is light wash jeans with dark stitching on them.

And it's not just light denim that can fall foul to this - dark jeans with white stitching are also a huge no-no, she said.

Fake jewels sewed or even glued onto clothing doesn't make it look more expensive, in fact it does the exact opposite, the fashion fan said.

You'd be better with a simple and plain top than one with all that extra pizzazz added to it, and it would probably look more expensive too, according to Shea.
