It’s taken Craig Revel Horwood 10 years to transform his London home from a virtual wreck with no kitchen or bathroom into a stunning two-bedroom town house with a roof terrace.
“It was very chaotic at first because I’d just downsized from a much bigger place, plus I had two friends and my sister sharing with me at the time – the dining room was a makeshift bedroom!” says Craig, 43.
“Now it’s just me and my new partner Grant, so we’re trying to make it our own by wiping the slate clean and completely redecorating the whole place.”
Craig initially decorated the lounge in a retro style with orange walls and plastic furniture, but decided to change it because he felt it lacked comfort.
“After that, I went through a grey phase, which was muted and very calming, especially after a stressful day,” he explains.
“Then I had a white phase, which looked great when everything was new – but it wasn’t practical and it felt cold.
"So now we’re back to square one with muted browns and rich, jewelled accents.”
Craig’s hectic professional life – he does television, theatre and charity work – means he relishes his moments at home when he can switch off, put his feet up with a glass of wine and a good book, and shut himself off from the outside world.
“I travel a lot with work which can make it difficult to stay in contact with friends, so when I’m at home I love having them over for drinks,” he says.
“Too many people allow their friendships to drift away when they’re busy, but I make the effort not to let that happen.”
All Balls And Glitter: My Life by Craig Revel Horwood is published by Michael O’Mara Books on September 4, priced £18.99. Strictly Come Dancing is back on BBC1 in September.

1. GIANT CLOCK “There’s no excuse for being late with this on the wall.”
2. SILVER ORNAMENT “I brought this bread tin back from Morocco.”
3. LEATHER SOFA “This is from the furniture store Revel Lloyd, which I opened with my ex-partner.”
4. CUSHIONS “These sparkly cushions are from John Lewis. Grant’s always telling me off for not arranging them properly!”
5. PICTURE “This is from a Dutch production of La Traviata which I directed and choreographed.”

* Don’t mix and match too many colours and styles. Keep it simple.
* Buy for comfort, not style. I learnt this the hard way when I bought plastic furniture I couldn’t sit on!
* When starting a new relationship, begin with a clean slate in your home too, and purge! Old stuff can trigger bad memories.
