DR HILARY'S DIAGNOSIS

The loss of a baby through miscarriage is always heartbreaking, no matter when it happens.

As many as one in four pregnancies ends in miscarriage, but most occur at such an early stage there aren’t any symptoms and the woman’s periods are hardly interrupted, so she may not even notice.

Miscarriages can be the result of the fertilised egg failing to implant properly into the wall of the uterus, hormonal deficiencies, or nature’s way of preventing an abnormal embryo developing any further.

Because Natasha has already had two healthy pregnancies, her chances of another miscarriage are no greater than for anyone else, so despite what she’s been told, her future is brighter than she thinks.

Some women do have recurrent miscarriages but this isn’t common. Anyone having more than three should be referred to a specialist clinic for tests.

Natasha needn’t wait longer than three months after her miscarriage to try again for a baby.

'Am I more at risk of miscarriage?'

EVERY WEEK A CELEB ASKS OUR FABULOUS DOCTOR FOR DIAGNOSIS. THIS WEEK IT’S ATOMIC KITTEN NATASHA HAMILTON, 25

My husband Riad and I were eager to have a baby after getting married last November.

I already have two sons, Josh, five, and Harry, three, from previous relationships, but I really wanted a child with Riad to cement our little family.

We found out I was pregnant in the new year. It was such an exciting moment for us both.

I had a difficult second pregnancy, suffering from bleeding before going into premature labour.

Because of this, I knew the doctor would want to keep a close eye on my third pregnancy.

I was six weeks pregnant when I began to feel unwell with a high fever and pains in my stomach.

My doctor advised me to take a small dose of paracetamol and go to bed.

When I woke the next day I was bleeding, but because of my history I didn’t immediately realise I was having a miscarriage.

I called my doctor again and he told me to go straight to the hospital to have a scan, which revealed that I was losing my baby.

Although the miscarriage happened early in my pregnancy it has still been a very difficult and emotional time for Riad and I.

Overnight all our dreams for this baby were taken away, and that has been very hard.

I would like to have another child in the future, but right now my emotions are too raw.

I’m worried that I may have another miscarriage as I’ve been told my chances of it happening again have now increased. Is this true?
