SO YOU THOUGHT EARNING £100,000 MIGHT MAKE YOU 100,000 TIMES HAPPIER? THINK AGAIN. SUCCESSFUL WOMEN ARE FINDING THAT BAGS OF CASH CAN MEAN BAGS OF PROBLEMS...
By Kasie Davies

Checking out her Gucci dress in the mirror and adjusting the Tiffany bracelet on her wrist, Joanna Anderson is about as glam as glam gets.

Add an Audi A4 sports car, a £1.2million designer pad in London's exclusive Notting Hill and a collection of Louboutins, and she seems to have a pretty cushy life.

Except for one thing: she's deeply unhappy.

"I can buy any amount of designer bags or shoes, but they don't give you a cuddleat night," she says.

"My life's very lonely."

Joanna's just one of a growing number of British women who are loaded but fed up.

No genuine friends, no time to see family, competition to 'keep up', are all issues that rich young women worry about.

Psychologist Averil Leimon explains: "We see a glamorous lifestyle as a good one, but why do we think money can make us happy?

"It certainly can't get us a loving family, close friends and good health."

Even A-listers admit they were more content before they started earning huge salaries.

Renée Zellweger famously confessed she was happier when she was a waitress – and that’s something Joanna can relate to.

"I holiday at the chic Sandy Lane resort in Barbados or my villa in Spain," she says.

"And I'm a regular at exclusive London restaurants like The Ivy, Nobu and Zuma.

"I work hard to make my money, and every night I'm on the guest list for the coolest clubs and bars, but it doesn't mean a thing to me any more."

By 23, Joanna was earning £50,000 a year in advertising, flying round the world in business class with a gold card and a chauffeur-driven limo.

"Then I landed a glamorous job in TV mixing with top celebrities," she says.

"Every night meant another showbiz event and I spent thousands keeping on trend."

Now 33, after making £1million buying flats, she set up her own company finding luxury homes for busy high-flyers.

But while her business has been a success, the same can't be said for the rest of her life.

"No one takes the time to get to know the real me," she complains.

"I'm always quickly replaced with someone cooler or with more cash."

Psychologist Oliver James calls society's current obsession with money 'affluenza'.

Those without wads in the bank apparently feel depressed and envious of those who do – while those who are already loaded crave more.

According to Oliver, it's only when we swap chasing money for finding out what really makes us happy that we can be 'cured'.

And if you're thinking a Miu Miu handbag will solve your problems, think again –Oliver's talking emotional contentment.

"I know I'm lucky to have all I do, but my house, car, wardrobe and holidays mean nothing," Joanna says.

"I'd swap my most expensive shoes in a second to feel happy."

The girl's offering up her Louboutins? She must be serious.
