'I DON'T WANT ANYONE'S PITY'

Becca Legon, 27, was born with her left thigh missing. Her lower leg, which grew from her hip, was amputated when she was nine. The PA from Faringdon, Oxfordshire, wears a false leg and walks with the aid of a stick.

When people say the word disabled, I always think it applies to someone else.

I have no qualms about going out in a miniskirt or shorts.

I know people notice my false leg, but I’ve stopped noticing them. I’m happy, strong and confident.

Sometimes I wonder who I would be if I had two legs. I think I might be more uptight.

Let’s face it – if you have a false leg, you don’t panic about your hair not looking right. I don’t do depression.

I have a career, I enjoy sport, I have a great social life and a lovely boyfriend.

I met Adam, a plumber, through mutual friends. I was nervous undressing in front of him.

But only like any woman getting naked for the first time with a new man.

I love the body I live in and I take good care of it. I’m up at 5.30am every day to go to the gym.

If someone said to me I could win the lottery or have two legs, I’d go for the lottery win every time.

Honest!

The TV show has made me reconsider my career prospects.

I hope it teaches viewers two things: first, don’t be afraid of us and second, stop feeling sorry for us.

'I’M PARALYSED BUT A HAPPIER PERSON'

Sophie Morgan, 23, crashed her car on the way home from a party and was paralysed from the chest down. Sophie, from London, abandoned plans to study law and pursued her dream of going to art school.

You never really accept what’s happened, but you do have to get on with it.

I was not emotionally shattered after the accident. It made me more resourceful, more determined, happier.

I don’t want to sound clichéd but it puts your priorities in order.

Some people wanted to see more grief and self-pity, but that’s not how I am.

I could get angry and frustrated, but I focus on things I can do instead of those I can’t.

I drive an adapted car, I ski on adapted skis, I’ve been skydiving and I travel.

One day I might settle down and have children – I really do lead a normal life.

My boyfriend Tom, 24, is able-bodied.

We met through friends and, like most young guys, disability frightened him.

But he got to know me, and realised I wasn’t that different.

I went on the TV show to try to change people’s perceptions and attitudes to the disabled.

They are so quick to judge.

I think society is blinkered about beauty – how much of that I can change I don’t know, but it won’t stop me trying.

'I WAS TERRIFIED BUT I HAD TO PROVE A POINT'

Kelly Knox, 23, was born without a left forearm. The credit controller from Enfield, Middlesex, has a false arm but finds life easier without it.

I’m a bubbly person – always first on the dance floor and last off.

Other people take their lead from me.

Occasionally a guy asks about my arm and I just say I was born this way.

But nine out of 10 people don’t enquire – they see me as I am, not the bit that’s missing.

I don’t wear my false arm because it makes me feel disabled.

It’s heavy, it’s plastic, it’s fake, and I can’t do a thing with it.

I have my own elbow joint intact and that makes a big difference to tasks like being able to dry my hair.

I was terrified about doing the show because it meant being around disabled people.

I took part because I wanted to cross boundaries.

I always have – like on holiday in Turkey when I went paragliding.

The instructor was adamant I’d need two hands and I was adamant I wouldn’t.

It was the scariest 10 minutes of my life, but I proved my point.
