Chuck your jeans in the washing machine and don’t take them out again until the colour’s all gone. Yes, dressing in distressed denim – even if it’s ripped to shreds – is back in vogue and it’s set to be hot this spring. So make peace with stonewash jeans (but please, avoid the patchwork look).

How not to wear them

* Fortunately Debbie Harry’s socks and sandals look won’t be making a comeback in the stonewash revival.

* Desperate Housewives actress Nicolette Sheridan, however, has no excuse.

* We think her stylist had the day off when she stepped out in this dodgy creation.

How to wear them

* Be a denim diva like the two Kates. Keep the look casual and wear with boots and this season’s boxy cropped blazer.

* Add your own individual style with accessories or a vibrant splash of colour, à la Ms Moss.
