How do the Spice Girls keep SO TRIM?

ONE OF THE GIRLS HATES EXERCISE, ANOTHER REFUSES TO DIET AND THREE OF THEM HAVE ALL GIVEN BIRTH IN THE LAST 18 MONTHS - ALTHOUGH YOU WOULD NEVER KNOW FROM LOOKING AT THEIR BODIES. WE DELVE INTO THE DIET AND FITNESS SECRETS OF THE GIRLS AND FIND OUT THE TRUTH BEHIND THEIR FIGURES
By Laura Bond

Victoria Beckham

The one place you won't catch Victoria Beckham is the gym. Despite her super-skinny size 0 frame, Posh is not a fan of exercise.

"I don't really like the gym, in fact I can't stand it," she says. "Maybe it's the whole getting sweaty thing, but it's just not me."

That's not to say she never works out though.

In preparation for the Spice Girls world tour the Vic would do 200 sit-ups everyday to get in shape.

And was even said to bounce her way thin… on a trampoline! Just 10 minutes of bouncing on one is equivalent to 30 minutes of jogging.

If she was going to exercise regularly though, Victoria says she’d join a pilates class because it looks “civilized!”

"I want to get fit though, so I'm exploring some different options.

"I like what I've heard about pilates - just sitting in a room, stretching and breathing. Sounds much more civilised."

Victoria receives the worst press about her size zero frame, and is it any surprise when she openly admits she doesn’t exercise and just eats the bare essentials to maintain her size?

The 5ft 6 star relies on the fat-busting Pu-erh tea to boost her metabolism and stimulate her body into burning fat, as well as seaweed and algae shakes and edamame beans.

But the mum-of-three’s biggest food essential is steamed fish, and a healthy diet:

"I eat really healthily. I love Japanese food, lots of fish, any sort of fish, any sort of vegetable, lots of fruit, that kind of thing."

But even the multi-millionairess admits to having body hang-ups, "I've got so much saggy skin on my stomach.

"I might fit into jeans, but trust me, I look really awful naked."

Emma Bunton

Giving birth to baby Beau just weeks before the girls’ grueling re-union tour sent Emma straight to the treadmill to help her lose weight.

"I did go to the gym, but three times a week instead of seven - being stuck on a running machine for hours is so dull."

Instead, the London-born star likes to dance.

“I always say dancing is the very best way to lose weight. It's definitely my hot tip for post-baby weight loss, girls!"

Emma also puts maintaining her toned size 12 body down to a healthy diet, with the occasional choccie treat thrown in!

"It takes a while to lose the baby weight.

"But I didn't feel I had to starve myself.

"I wanted to do everything naturally without going on a strict diet.

"I made sure I got the right nutrients, just in smaller portions.

"If I felt hungry I snacked on fruit," she explains.

“But for me, a diet without chocolate was never going to work.

"There are some things you can't deny yourself.

"As much chocolate as possible, please!"

Geri Halliwell

Formerly the most voluptuous in the group, Geri Halliwell’s curves and cleavage made her stand out from the rest of the band.

But after leaving the girl group, Geri went up-and-down the scales like a yo-yo, and it's only recently that she's managed to maintain a healthy size.

Her love of exercise is well known but Geri says the active fitness regime she follows is now more for pleasure than to actually lose weight:

"When I exercise it is for pure fitness and not to lose weight," she says.

" I have spent too much of my life focusing on that. I've done a lot of work to move on."

Enjoying weekly 10 mile runs and regular walks and bike rides in the park have seen the 35-year-old’s figure tone up no end.

But her favourite exercise is power-walking with Kettlebells.

This wonder-machine can burn up to a staggering 1500 calories in just an hour, so it’s clear why she loves it!

A healthy diet also plays an important role in maintaining Geri's body.

A typical day of eating for the 5ft 2 star, would be Oatmeal with linseed and sunflower seeds for breakfast, and Quinoa with vegetables and chicken or fish for lunch and dinner.

And to snack on during the day, she chooses rice cakes, edamame and fruit.

With Geri’s more healthier approach to diet and exercise she says the men are flocking:

"When I was skinny, my love life was like a desert, but the minute I got a few pounds on me, it all changed."

Mel C

Melanie Chisholm famously earned her ‘Sporty’ tag because of her washboard stomach.

She now says she may have looked fit but was in fact not healthy at all.

"When I was with the Spice Girls, I was underweight.

"I wasn't eating properly and I was overtraining.

"My periods stopped and my bone density was low.

"I was unhappy and isolated and it took me a long time to get better."

Now a happy size 8, Mel has been eating well and exercising regularly and sensibly.

To look her best, she says she exercises "three to five times a week - either running, cycling or yoga."

Mel also reveals, "I get up at 8.30am and do at least 30 minutes of exercise to open the lungs."

After the original Spice Girl years, Mel went on to forge herself a career as a solo artist.

This is when her weight ballooned, and admitting she suffered from depression, she began to comfort eat.

Now all this has changed, as she explains:

“I have a healthy attitude to food and exercise.

"I'll never diet or starve myself, especially when I have to perform.

"I've learnt my limits and experienced the repurcussions of not looking after myself, so I don't intend to go back there."

When it comes to her diet, Mel knows it's important to eat well so she has the energy to perform but she still makes sure her meals aren't going to pile on the pounds again.

"For dinner I'd have smoked mackerel with steamed vegetables and new potatoes," explains Mel.

"I'm quite healthy with snacks and stick to nuts and dried fruits."

In the past Mel has also experimented with a slightly unusual eating habit.

As the most flat-chested member of the Spice Girls, Mel started eating specialist Japanese F-Cup cookies in an attempt to make her breasts bigger.

The biscuits, with a calorific value 68.7 each, contain trans-fats which are sent directly to the breast ares, as well as 50mg of "breast-enhancing herb" Pueraria Mirifica.

In preparation for the Spice Girls reunion tour last year, the Liverpudlian lass began munching on these, and with the manufacturers claiming women can expect to see their breasts increase by at least a cup-size if they eat two cookies a day, who can blame her?

Mel B

As Scary Spice, she was known for her rippling muscles and honed physique.

And after a few years of going up-and down the scales, it seems Melanie Brown may well be known for her figure once again.

Less than a week after giving birth, the 33-year-old got to work with a personal trainer.

She still keeps the sessions up and he puts Mel through her paces for two hours each day.

The mum-of-two, who is the proud owner of a great bottom and great boobs, also practices Capoeira - the Brazilian martial art - and yoga.

These help her body to stay toned and taut, as well as keeping her muscle lean rather than bulky.

To help regain the famous figure she had in the nineties, Mel practices Qigong, a Chinese therapy, which involves movement and regulated breathing.

This allows the gorgeous singer to firm her stomach muscles and helps her to reduce stress levels and maintain her health.

Mel also credits her successful stint on Dancing With The Stars as keeping her in tip-top shape.

"If you want to get a really sexy backside and good legs, just do non-stop dancing in four-inch heels.

"Your legs are tensed up all the time and it gives you a killer shape."

Now the face and body of Ultimo, it's important Mel keeps up the good work, and to maintain her solid six-pack.

Mel says, "My tip is sit-ups. Every single day I do 100 without fail."

In a complete role-reversal to bandmate, Victoria Beckham, Mel 's super-toned body is entirely down to exercise.

"I don't believe in diets, I believe in listening to your body and being consistent," explains Mel.

"If you want a burger, have one, but balance it out the next day by eating salmon and vegetables."
