A diet of mutton, kidneys and stewed fruit might not sound like your idea of a good time, but it worked for 31-year-old Suzy Bennett.
She lost more than 1st in three weeks after signing up for a TV programme in which she stepped back in time more than 100 years to live on a typical Victorian diet.
Out went pizza and cheesecake, and in came a low-carb regime of rusks, vegetables, fish and cold meat.
“At times I was starving and all that was available was pheasant with the head still on!” explains Suzy, a comedienne from London.
Before she took part in The Diets That Time Forgot,5ft 6in Suzy weighed 15st 2lb.
As a lifelong yo-yo dieter, she’d tried every slimming craze going but with little success. “By the time I reached size 20, I’d lost my confidence and hated how I looked,” she says.
Suzy’s Victorian diet meant she had to cut out bread, potatoes and sugar. Instead, in came lots of meat, including mutton and kidneys, and treats such as sherry at lunchtime.
Suzy, who’s single, moved into a house to film the TV series and was made to live like a Victorian, even wearing fashions from the era.
“I enjoyed the first week because it was a novelty, but the tight corset restricted the amount I could eat,” she says.
After three tough weeks, Suzy had lost 1st, dropping to 14st 2lb, by sticking strictly to the diet. More importantly, though, she’d confronted her weight problems.
“I’d already accepted that being big could cause medical problems for me in the future,” she says.
“I’m delighted with how I look now, and being on the Victorian diet has changed my bad eating habits for good. Fresh, natural food is the way to go and fast food is out.
“After going so long without bread I feel bloated if I eat it now so I avoid it. I used to adore a KFC, too, but I haven’t had one since I did the diet.
"I now fit into size 16-18 clothes, I’ve rediscovered my confidence – and I even have two men chasing after me!”
The Diets That Time Forgot starts on Tuesday, 9pm, Channel 4
