Katie Arnold hasn’t been to a wedding since she was a bridesmaid at one 10 years ago, but this summer she’s going to three. “And I haven’t a clue what to wear,” she explains.

The first wedding is her best friend Kelly’s. “It’s in the country in June,” says Katie, 23, a legal assistant from London. “Then I’m going to a city wedding in a posh hotel.”

But it’s wedding number three that’s making Katie nervous.

“My boyfriend Darren is taking me to the wedding of one of his oldest friends,” she explains. “I won’t know anyone so I need to feel confident.”

TV stylist Nicky Hambleton-Jones has the answer with three on-trend looks.

“Modern weddings are generally a lot less formal so it’s easier to wear something that suits your individual style,” says Nicky.

KATIE'S VERDICT:

“I never thought I could get away with white trousers or a pencil skirt for a wedding,” says Katie, “but they really work, and I can wear them again and again.”

Nicky presents 10 Years Younger. Her book, Top To Toe, is out now (Hodder & Stoughton, £16.99).

Nicky says (LEFT OUTFIT): “Wearing these flattering wide-leg trousers will give Katie the confidence to mingle with Darren’s old friends. The pink flower gives the look a flirty ‘wedding’ touch.”

Nicky says: “Modern city weddings are fun because you can bend the rules, which means black isn’t automatically banned. But it’s essential to brighten up a black skirt with an eye-catching blouse.”

Top, £30, Mango;
skirt, £20, New Look;
necklace, £12, Mood at Debenhams;

Nicky says: “This floaty knee-skimming number in pretty muted pastels is perfect for a country wedding and it won’t upstage the bride. Katie can wear it with flip-flops and a cardi all summer-long.”
