'It took me 23 years to look THIS COOL!'

SHE’S TRIED GRUNGE AND ROCKED THE GEEK-CHIC LOOK, BUT IT WAS ONLY WHEN KELLY OSBOURNE, 23, FOUND HER FEMININE SIDE THAT SHE FELT PRETTY. HERE, IN HER OWN WORDS, SHE REVEALS HER PASSION FOR FASHION…

Outfits can change how you feel on the inside. There are some days when I wake up feeling absolutely terrible, but if I put on a dress I love – even if it’s a bit too glam to walk the dog in – it makes me feel loads better. The best part of my day is deciding what to wear. I love dressing up because I can wake up in the morning and tell the world how I’m feeling just by my clothes.

I’ve not always been aware of what was cool. I dressed like a boy until I was about 13, then I got my periods and realised I should dress a bit more girlie. Like all teens, I started to become more conscious of what I wore. I went through a phase when I experimented with my style and was desperate not to look like anyone else.

We’re not all supermodels, what might look great on one person doesn’t necessarily suit another. I tell everyone who asks me about fashion that as an individual you can choose yourself what is in or out.

I’ve made tons of fashion mistakes, but that’s the whole point. Fashion should be fun. My style icons are Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly and Marilyn Monroe. I also think Beth Ditto has amazing style and isn’t afraid to push boundaries.

In the last year my style has become more grown-up. I wore a fabulous PPQ black and white dress to a DJ gig recently. I was really self-conscious about my legs, but I saw the picture in the papers the next day and realised they aren’t that bad. Everyone always says not to wear horizontal stripes, but I love how this dress makes me look skinnier than I really am – that’s a first!

The first time I put on a dress and felt beautiful was when I presented ITV2’s coverage of the National Television Awards. It was a gold Bellville Sassoon dress and I got so many compliments – little did people know that I’d fallen down stairs that morning as I raced to leave the house and slipped a disc. I was in such pain – beauty costs!

You don’t have to earn a fortune to make a style statement. I don’t just buy designer items, most of my wardrobe is from the high street, particularly Topshop. When I want to splash out a little more, I turn to Luella, one of my favourite designers – I wore a gorgeous Luella dress at the Brit Awards launch. Her style is nerdy girl meets rock chick. It’s both edgy and original. And every time I wear anything by her I feel special and get a million people asking where I got it from.

Never throw anything away as trends always come back round. That’s the best piece of advice I can give. Take Madonna, for example. When she first exploded onto the music scene in the ’80s she was broke, but she managed to put together an image that was copied all over the world. She now uses clothes to reinvent herself over and over again. Her earlier look will probably come round again during the ’80s revival we’re having at the moment. In fact, I’ve got a beautiful vintage Chanel jacket that I always wear. It’s such a classic, I’m going to keep it for my daughter. Hopefully she can then write about it too!

Kelly hosts The Surgery on Radio 1, Sundays at 10pm.
