'WAGS ARE A JOKE - they're not normal!'

OK, SO SHE’S DATING A PREMIERSHIP FOOTBALLER, BUT ABBEY CLANCY SAYS THE LAST THING SHE WANTS IS TO BE LABELLED WITH THE WAG TAG

Abbey Clancy is adamant about one thing: she is not, repeat, not, a WAG. The statuesque 22 year old may tick the boxes – her boyfriend is England and Portsmouth star Peter Crouch, she has blonde hair and a huge affection for expensive designer shoes – but that, she says, is as far as it goes.

"Seriously, I don't even think about the WAG thing other than to think it's funny. Me and Peter joke about it actually," she insists. "I just think of us as normal people who are in a loving relationship and work hard."

What, no mad nights out with all the other WAGs, like Alex Curran and Coleen?

"I used to see the other girls at Liverpool games, but my only real ‘WAG' friend is Elen Rives, Frank Lampard's girlfriend," Abbey says. "I met her at the World Cup and we instantly clicked. She's the only one I consider a true friend. She's lovely, so normal."

It's a surprising admission, but spend just a few minutes in Abbey's company and it's clear she's not your average footballer's moll. For a start, she's more likely to be found rifling through the rails on the high street than in expensive boutiques.

"I love Zara and Topshop, in fact I tend to only go to them," says Abbey, who has been with Peter, 27, for three years. "I admit I do like my designer shoes – my biggest splurge was a pair of £1,000 Christian Louboutin thigh-high boots, which was ridiculous as they're too small so I can only wear them for five minutes! I don't really tend to buy the big designers. It's too extravagant and unnecessary when you can get fabulous stuff on the high street."

This makes her a natural choice to front The Fashion Show, a new series on ITV2 focusing on high street rather than high end. It's a departure for Abbey – after finding fame on the 2006 series of Britain's Next Top Model, there have been a couple of reality shows, but this is her first solo gig.

She admits: "I was terrified filming the first show but I'm loving it now. They put a lot of trust in me. I wouldn't do it if I didn't enjoy it – I don't need to be on TV or on the front of a magazine. I'm not very driven that way. I'm just lucky to have chances come my way."

This might sound like typical celeb bluster, but Abbey has, arguably, already shown where her priorities lie. After taking part in the reality show Abbey & Janice: Beauty And The Best, when ex-supermodel Janice Dickinson helped launch Abbey's career in America, she was inundated with opportunities there but rejected them to stay close to Peter.

"I didn't think twice," she says. "I don't want to be away from him. We're together, so whatever happens to him happens to me. Wherever he has to go, I'll go."

That's meant moving from her native Liverpool after Peter was transferred to Portsmouth over the summer. It's been a wrench, but compensation comes in the form of the "gorgeous" house they've bought in Surrey.

"We've been renting for so long, so to have our own home is lovely," says Abbey. "It's not stupidly massive and it's really homely. Peter found it and was so excited, then I saw it and I fell in love with it instantly. Everything's in boxes and we're sleeping on a blow-up bed but I feel so happy there. And we've just got two little kittens called Baby and Maggie."

That's as far as it goes on the baby front – Abbey says they're in no rush for wedding bells and nappies.

"For now we're just going with the flow, cheesy as it sounds. We have a great relationship. We're happy as we are," she says.

It's not all been plain sailing though. The relationship seemed almost over before it started when Peter sent Abbey home from the 2006 World Cup after pictures of her snorting cocaine surfaced. Unsurprisingly, she bats back questions about her drug use and will only say that she wishes she could "tweak" a few things from her past.

"I'd like to not have made some mistakes," she says. "But mistakes form part of who you are today, so it's a fine line. Ultimately I think I'm quite grounded in that I do appreciate what I've got."

What she has definitely got is the sort of figure other women would die for. At 5ft 9in, she's a size 8, weighs around 8st 7lb and has an impressive 30D cleavage (although she confesses she was a late developer and used to stuff tissue down her bra at school). But she says: "I've never exercised. I go through phases of wanting to go to the gym. I started once with my mum. We went every day for a week and I put on 5lb, so that was the end of that.

"I eat what I want. I've got a massive appetite which is quite bad – like now I'm a bit overweight because I've been eating loads. Last night me and Peter went out for a meal and I had pâté then chicken liver with mash then chocolate brownie and ice cream!"

And Abbey's not immune to other female worries either.

"I hate my freckles, they make me sick," she says. "I can't bear them. And I'm always fretting about ageing. I look in the mirror every day worrying about whether I've got lines and I've tried a million different creams. I'm not one of those people who say I'll never have Botox – if you need it, get it."

Abbey has one burning ambition before wrinkles take hold.

She reveals: "My main goal is to be a Victoria's Secret lingerie model. Seriously, once I've done that I can happily die. But for now I also want to enjoy sitting in my garden and playing with my kittens. So maybe that goal is for next year."

We can't imagine Peter complaining…

The Fashion Show starts Thursday on ITV2.
