5 STEPS TO A NO-MESS MANICURE...

1. Be organised. If you’re going out shortly after, make sure your shoes are on and that you have your car keys, bus fare, mobile phone and so on out of your handbag and ready. There is no point painting nails perfectly if they get damaged in the rush to go out.

2. Once you’ve painted your nails, run the brush across the tip. It gives a professional finish and helps prevent chips.

3. Apply two thin coats of polish rather than one thick one.

The thicker the coat, the longer it takes to dry and the more likely it is to smudge and chip.

4. Wait at least two minutes between each layer, then wait another three minutes before applying your top coat.

5. Be patient. There’s no miracle product for getting nails dry double-quick, but you can help them set quicker by plunging them into ice-cold water.

SNAKE VENOM, SWEAT AND OTHER ICKY BODY FLUIDS MAY NOT SOUND PRETTY, BUT THEY’RE REVOLUTIONISING THE BEAUTY WORLD

WRINKLE-BUSTING ORCHIDS

Orchids are having a beauty moment after research found that extracts from the exotic blooms have concentrated anti-ageing properties. If you’re on a budget, try Boots Botanics Mature Anti-Wrinkle Firming Day Cream, £5.99, which uses purple orchid extract to help soothe and moisturise dry skin. If you’re feeling flush, invest in Guerlain’s Orchidee Imperiale Serum, £215, which contains a rare orchid elixir to feed skin with radiance-boosting and firming goodness.

HAND-BUFFING DIAMONDS

It should come as no surprise that diamonds are the secret ingredient in Mrs Beckham’s favourite hand product. But despite its bling credentials, Diamond Skin Like Silk Hand & Nail Scrub only costs a tenner. Tiny fragments of the precious gem are the best thing for exfoliating hands, according to its creator Leighton Denny.

ATTRACTION-BOOSTING SWEAT

Secretions Magnifiques, £76, claims to make you smell irresistible, thanks to blood, sweat, saliva and sperm (ewww!). Perfumiers État Libre d’Orange say it’s these ingredients that make it so seductive. Thankfully, the bodily fluids are artificially recreated and not collected from random men – and, even better, coconut and sandalwood overpower any hints of teenage boy’s bedroom.

BODY-REPAIRING CAVIAR

It’s an acquired taste, but as a beauty ingredient, caviar suits everyone. The tiny fish eggs are packed with omega-3 fatty acids that nourish and repair all skin types. Manufacturers are falling over themselves to find a way to make this delicacy more affordable as a miracle beauty ingredient. For around £20, you can treat your hair to Alterna’s Caviar Anti-Aging Shampoo to boost dull and lifeless locks – with no fishy niff! Or for £10, nourish nails with Nails Inc Kensington Caviar Base Coat, which feeds brittle nails back to health and provides a perfect base for colour.

SPOT-BLITZING WHEATGRASS

Wheatgrass has long been used as an energy booster by LA’s A-listers – now the superfood has found its way on to beauty counters. Janet Ginnings’ Indian Infusion is the first skincare line to boast the ingredient, which contains 20 amino acids and more than 100 vitamins and minerals. Celebrity fans include Sadie Frost. We love the Face Mask Smoothie, £27, which gives skin an instant glow.

AGE-FIGHTING FUNGUS

Tea has been used in beauty products for years, especially the green stuff, but this season it’s black tea made from exotic mushrooms that’s wowing beauty journalists. Tri-Aktiline Instant Deep Wrinkle Filler, £24.99, uses a derivative from the brew called kombuchka to help smooth out and freeze wrinkles. Use it where you need it most – crow’s feet, laughter and frown lines, and anywhere facial expressions have left their mark.

SKIN-SMOOTHING SNAKE VENOM

Gwynnie’s youthful glow isn’t only down to a macrobiotic diet. The baby-faced beauty says no to Botox, but isn’t averse to beauty products with similar muscle-relaxing properties. Synake is a synthetic venom with the paralysing effect of snake poison to help smooth out wrinkles around the eyes, mouth and forehead. Find it in Crystal Clear Intense Anti-Ageing Serum, £60.

HAIR-HEALING FRUIT OILS

Argan oil – made from the fruit of a Moroccan tree – is an ancient skin remedy from North Africa used for treating dry and damaged skin. Now its nourishing properties have been used in Shu Uemura’s new Art Of Hair Silk Bloom collection. Formulated for damaged hair, the rare oil replaces the lipids that are naturally found in healthy hair fibre. For a super-intensive treat, try the Restorative Treatment, £35, and watch your hair get happy.
