The difference with this season’s blush is where it’s applied. “Blusher is usually high on the cheekbone to sculpt the face,” says Max Factor make-up artist Caroline Barnes. But this autumn the focus is on the apples of the cheek to mimic the flattering glow from a winter walk. “Start at the fullest part of the cheek, and blend up towards your hairline,” advises Caroline.

Mary Greenwell, make-up artist to Kate Moss and Elle Macpherson, suggests using a shimmery powder blush. “It adds a natural, dewy sheen that blends easily,” she says.

THE NEW BASE

Natural, matte foundation is key for this season. “Autumn is all about seamless, naked beauty,” says make-up guru Lee Pycroft. “The face is contoured with different shades to give the illusion of bare-faced beauty. Rather than the sheer coverage we saw this summer, use a medium coverage foundation and opaque concealer.”

According to Maybelline make-up artist Fiona Jolly, the key to flawless foundation is in the application. “Pat the colour in rather than smudging it, to give you more control,” she says. “Use a foundation a shade darker under the cheekbones to add definition.”

THE NEW EYES

If you’re not a dab hand at the Winehouse eyeliner flick, don’t worry – the new season’s smudged look is easy to get right. Colour is applied liberally below the lash-line and almost up to the brow. And if you make a mistake, no sweat – it’s all about that slept-in look, so smudges, creases and spills all work.

Celebrity make-up artist Lou Page says bronze is her colour of the season. “It’s gorgeous for autumn, mimicking the shade of fallen leaves,” she says. For that partied-all-night look, apply a cream shadow with your finger, starting at the corner of the eye and work upwards and outwards. Then, using your little finger, apply a thick line of shadow under the eye. Finish with lashings of black mascara.

THE NEW LIPS

Dark, wine-stained lips are storming the catwalks. This gothic look uses deep reds, burgundy and plums to vamp up your pout, but the key is in the application – you should look as if you’ve been wearing it all day.

Lips must be flake-free, so exfoliate them with a lip scrub. “Then, if you’re using a lipstick, choose a classic vampy shade with a creamy, velvety texture, and apply a thin layer using a lip brush for a base stain,” says No7 make-up artist Lisa Eldridge. “Blot with tissue then dab your middle finger onto the lipstick, and gently pat the colour across your lips.” Et voila! Wine-stained lips without the hangover.
