First things first: face up to your hair mare, then you can decide on the best way to deal with it. Identify your hair type so you can buy the best products to suit you.
CURLY
* Always use a conditioner.
* Let your hair dry as naturally as possible.
* Use serum to tame frizz.
* Don’t fight your hair’s natural wave.
FINE & FLYAWAY
* Use volumising products.
* Only use conditioner on the ends to avoid weighing hair down.
* Have layers cut in to give hair more oomph.
* Don’t grow hair too long or it will look lank and lifeless.
FRIZZY
* Use shampoos that moisturise too.
* Apply a ‘sealing’ product like serum after a shower.
* Blow-dry thoroughly to prevent out-of-control frizz.
* Don’t brush hair when it’s styled. Use a comb or your fingers instead.
DRY
* Wash with a gentle shampoo every other day.
* Work the shampoo into your scalp and let the residue clean the rest.
* Use a leave-in conditioner to help soften hair.
* Stick to one heat appliance – hairdryer OR straighteners.
GREASY
* Wash hair every day with a ‘balancing’ or ‘anti-residue’ shampoo.
* Use conditioner, but only on the tips.
* Sprinkle talc on roots if it gets greasy – then brush through afterwards.
* Don’t use serums or waxes containing greasy oils.

Regular cuts every six weeks will remove dead ends and keep your style fresh.
Fearne Cotton’s favourite hairdresser, Mark Hill, says: “Subtle changes to your cut can put vitality and life back into your hair.
A soft fringe or longer layers around the jawline to frame the face will instantly re-energise a style.”
TIP: Show your hairdresser pictures of your fave celeb cuts and old styles that suited you best to help get your dream cut.

“Environmental pollution and product build-up can make it appear lacklustre,” says Darren Fowler, from hip London salon Clipso.
“Invest in a good cleansing shampoo like Kérastase Bain Clarifiant, £12.25, to give you a deep-clean.”
Use every few weeks for shiny, manageable hair.
TIP: Don’t clog your hair with too many products and let it dry naturally at least once a week.
