We sent Olivia Alvarez, 28, from London, to celebrity hairdresser Andrew Barton – who’s tended the tresses of Kate Moss, Kylie and Elle Macpherson – for a colour overhaul.
“I’m a serial colourist,” says Olivia. “In the past I’ve been purple, copper, platinum blonde and bright red – so now I’d like to try being a brunette.”
The verdict: “After the permanent dye had been washed off, I was in a mild state of shock,” admits Olivia. “But now I can’t believe how shiny my hair is. After having blonde highlights for months, it feels in much better condition. I absolutely love it!”

For on-trend tresses this season, the one thing you shouldn’t do is keep your natural colour. Dramatic dye jobs are the order of the day with everyone from Lindsay Lohan to Sienna Miller being papped blonde one minute, brunette the next.
But don’t think a half-head of highlights will do. No, the hottest hairdressers have been taking their inspiration from the super-brights on the runway.
“The fluoro colours we saw on the catwalk this season have fast-tracked to the salons,” says Jonathan Locke, Gliss Style consultant.
“This summer is all about swapping to bright, bold shades, like hot red, white-blonde and deepest browns and blacks.”
* Blonde Semi-permanent If your hair is naturally very dark, you won’t be able to go blonde without the help of peroxide-based colours to permanently lighten your locks. If you’re fair, however, you can add temporary golden tones with Clairol’s Nice ‘n’ Easy Level 1 in Beige Blonde, £3.99.
Permanent Boots Permanent Hair Colour in Lightest Blonde, £3.29, will transform dull hair into a champagne-shade Agyness Deyn-style do. Be sure to do a test on a few strands at the back of your head if your hair is naturally dark or has recently been coloured.
* Red Semi-permanent For a gorgeous copper shade, try using L’Oréal Casting Crème Gloss in Amber, £5.99. It lasts up to 28 washes.
Permanent If you want a more intense red shade, leave your colour on for as long as
the instructions allow. For the ultimate shiny barnet, try Garnier Nutrisse Permanent Hair Colour in Deep Red, £4.99.
* Brunette Semi-permanent Boots Semi-Permanent Colour in Dark Brown, £2.99, will turn hair a lovely deep chocolate and, as with all darker shades, it will add stacks of shine too.
Permanent Here at Fabulous we’re loving L’Oréal Excell 10 in Chocolate Brown, £7.99. It delivers rich, luscious colour in 10 minutes. That’s what we call a wash and go!
* Black Semi-permanent As long as your skin tone can take it, black can be striking – not to mention gloss-tastic. Boots Semi Permanent Hair Colour in Ebony Black, £2.99, gives an inky sheen that lasts 24 washes.
Permanent For those brave enough, try Herbal Essences Fearless Colour in Sapphire Black, £5.99, for a long-lasting black barnet.
“Coloured hair can fade quickly,” says Anita Cox, hair colourist to Mischa Barton and Anna Friel. “Using a shampoo and conditioner specifically targeted for your new shade makes a world of difference.”
To lock in colour and maximise shine, try using John Frieda’s special shampoos and conditioners – the Sheer Blonde, Radiant Red and Brilliant Brunette ranges, £4.49 each, lock in colour and maximise shine.
For a deep conditioning treatment, try Kérastase Reflection Bain Miroir, £11.05 – this luxurious shampoo keeps the colour looking salon-fresh.
