CURL POWER

SOMEONE ALERT JENNIFER ANISTON – CURLS ARE BACK! LET’S HOPE SHE READS THIS GUIDE TO ACHIEVING SUMMER’S HOTTEST HAIRSTYLE IN THREE EASY STEPS

TRIED AND TESTED

 The Noughties Perm

Award-winning hairdresser Errol Douglas says: “Waves are a strong trend this season, so it’s no wonder salon perms are making a comeback. But unlike the hideous poodle perms of the ’80s, today’s version is about volume, movement and glamour. Modern formulas make results really versatile and bespoke to the customer’s needs. Go for a loose, tousled look, tight ringlets or anything in between.”

We sent reader Elizabeth Hoehnke, 31, from London, to Errol’s salon to see what all the fuss is about.

THE CONSULTATION “I visited the salon two days before my perm so stylist Tracey could check my hair was in good enough condition and to discuss styles,” says Elizabeth.

“She advised me to go for fairly loose curls as my hair is fine and coloured, so it wouldn’t hold a tight wave.

"She also told me to condition it regularly afterwards as a perm can leave hair dry and brittle.”

THE TREATMENT “Tracey wound sections of my hair onto three different size rollers in a sideways direction so that the curls would hang nicely.

"She then applied a perming solution and wrapped my head in a polythene ‘bag’ to protect and set the curls.

"After 25 minutes, my hair was rinsed (still in curlers) to remove the solution.

"Tracey then applied another curling solution and left it on for 20 minutes to set the waves.

"After taking out all the rollers, a final solution was applied before rinsing and styling.”

THE VERDICT
“After having straight hair all my life, my new look took some getting used to,” admits Elizabeth.

“In fact, my friends didn’t even recognise me!

"But I do love it and I’m very impressed with the volume it’s given my normally limp and lifeless hair.

"I’d definitely have it done again!”

1. WORK THE TREND

Curls are summer’s hottest hair trend and the best bit is that getting the look is so easy.

“Curls are already everywhere in celebland,” says Leona Lewis’ personal hairdresser Ben Cooke.

“Sarah Harding and Kylie have both been sporting tight curls around town, and Beyoncé and Eva Longoria Parker have been working waves on the red carpet too.”

The trend has already hit the high street, with Superdrug reporting a 50 per cent rise in home perm kits in 2008.

But you don’t have to commit to permanent curls – there are lots of new wave gadgets you can use to achieve the same look temporarily.

“Anything goes this season,” predicts Ben. “Just as long as it’s not straight!”

To help you achieve that perfect wave – whether you’re going for a perm or just looking for short-term curls – match your hair to one of these three types:

* IF YOUR HAIR IS THICK AND CURLY... TRY TEXTURED WAVES as seen on Sarah Jessica Parker

* IF YOUR HAIR IS FINE AND STRAIGHT... TRY TOUSLED KINKS as seen on Scarlett Johansson

* IF YOUR HAIR IS COARSE AND FRIZZY.... TRY CORKSCREW CURLS as seen on Leona Lewis

2. PICK A PRODUCT

Next, it’s time to find your perfect curling product.

Picking one that’s right for your hair type is vital for achieving smooth and sexy (not frizzy and floppy) curls. Here’s what you should be shopping for:

THICK & CURLY hair? Lucky you – but you can still bring your style up to date with a curl-enhancer like Fekkai Coiff Océanique Tousled Wave Spray, £18.50. For a sexy beach style that’s straight from the sea (think Brooke Shields in Blue Lagoon), mist strands from root to tip before you dry.

FINE & STRAIGHT styles naturally require more curling time with a heated appliance, so it’s important to protect vulnerable strands from breaking with a heat-protecting curl booster. Before you style, spritz Schwarzkopf Pro Styling Heat Protection Curl Spray, £2.99, on damp hair to stop it singeing.

COARSE & FRIZZY types rely on fuzz-busting, firm-hold products to keep curls smooth. Charles Worthington Salon Shine Results Curl Perfector Mousse, £4.49, is non-sticky and keeps strands in place.

3. GET TOOLED UP

CRIMPERS Crimping is back too. “There’s been a resurgence of crimping, especially at the Mulberry and Burberry shows,” says former British Hairdresser Of The Year, Beverley C. To keep it modern, she advises crimping small sections on either side of the head, not all over. Try Babyliss’ Pro Ceramic Crimper, £14.99.

TONGS Large-barrelled tongs like Remington’s Protect and Shine Soft Curl Tongs, £17.99, are ideal for loose, natural curls. Ben Cooke explains: “Comb almost-dry hair into a parting. Working from the back in one-inch sections, hold the tong three-quarters of the way up the hair shaft and wind the hair tightly around the barrel. Hold for five seconds. Separate curls with your fingers.”

IRONS Don’t bin your straighteners – use them to curl your hair instead! Amy Winehouse’s stylist, Alex Foden, says: “Take one-inch sections and clamp the irons at the root. Tilt the irons at an angle and slide down the hair (like curling a ribbon). The bigger the section, the looser the curl.” Try D:Fuse Professional Ceramic Styling Irons, £89.95.
